Santorini and The Exodus: What is the Connection?
By Dr. Jehon Grist Executive Director, Lehrhaus Judaica

ABSTRACT In approximately 1630 BCE, a massive volcanic eruption occured on the island of Santorini in the southern Aegean Sea. Locally, the eruption fundamentally altered the geography of the island, devastated the Minoan city of Akrotiri, and is thought to have created tsunamis which damaged or destroyed settlements throughout the region. Ash deposits attributed to this eruption have been identified over a wide region of the Aegean and Mediterranean. Dr. Grist will introduce some of the archeological evidence associated with this erruption, and discuss how this geological event may have been incorporated into the story of the Exodus, as an example of the way in which myths and early history may be interwoven.
